Secrets of Travel Loyalty Programs: How I Travel for free

This post contains affiliate links. If you book or buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Are you ready to uncover the secrets of travel loyalty programs? Here’s how I make every trip rewarding! Whether you’re a frequent flyer, an occasional hotel guest, or a road trip enthusiast, mastering the art of loyalty programs can lead to significant savings and incredible travel perks. Let’s dive in!

    What are Travel Loyalty Programs?
Travel loyalty programs are designed to reward frequent customers of airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and car rental companies. By staying loyal to specific brands, savvy travelers like you and me can earn points or miles that translate into free flights, hotel stays, car rentals, and even cruises.

How to Sign Up and Start Earning
Signing up for loyalty programs is typically free and can be done in minutes. The next time you book a flight with Air France, for instance, be sure to enroll in their Flying Blue program.

Similarly, whether you find yourself flying Emirates or renting a car through Avis, signing up on your first booking ensures you start earning right away.

    Maximizing Point Accumulation
I treat every booking as an opportunity to earn points. My go-to program is Aeroplan, tied to Air Canada and part of the Star Alliance network. This strategy allows me to accumulate points across various airlines and hotels, including favorites like Marriott, Sheraton, and Westin. The key is consistency: the more you book within your chosen networks, the faster your points accumulate.

    Redeeming Points for Travel
Using your points is straightforward and rewarding. Most loyalty programs allow you to redeem points through their website or via partner portals. You can use points for free flights, upgrades to business class, luxury hotel rooms, or even that dream sports car rental. Remember, points can extend beyond flights to include a wide range of travel-related services.

    Demystifying Loyalty Programs
Some might think loyalty programs are too complex or not worth the effort, but with a bit of planning, they offer immense benefits. Over the years, I’ve refined my approach to become a skilled points collector, leveraging these programs for almost free travel.

Bonus Tips: Earning Points Without Traveling
You don’t need to be in the air or on the road to earn points. Here are some extra ways to boost your points balance:
    – Use a Co-Branded Credit Card:I use my loyalty program-linked credit card for everything from groceries to utility bills, ensuring I earn points on every dollar spent.
    – Dining and Shopping: Earn points by dining at partner restaurants or shopping with affiliated brands.
    – Participate in Surveys and Events:Many programs offer additional points for participating in surveys or attending special events.
    – Refer Friends:Some programs will reward you with bonus points for referring new members.

Travel loyalty programs are not just for the frequent business traveler but can enhance the travel experiences of families, solo adventurers, and occasional vacationers alike. Let’s share tips and help everyone travel smarter and more affordably. Join the conversation and let me know your strategies for travel success!

Accra, the vibrant capital of Ghana, is known for its rich history, lively arts scene, bustling markets, and beautiful beaches. It’s a dynamic city where traditional culture blends seamlessly with modern influences, offering a perfect introduction to West Africa. Here’s your guide to experiencing Accra, along with a must-do day trip to Cape Coast Castle.

    Top Attractions in Accra

    1. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
This monument is dedicated to Ghana’s first president and a key figure in African independence movements. The park houses Nkrumah’s mausoleum, museum, and a statue, offering insights into Ghana’s fight for freedom and its post-independence history.
    2. Independence Square
A grand, open square symbolizing Ghana’s independence from colonial rule. It’s the perfect spot for photos with the famous Black Star Gate, a key symbol of African liberation. The square hosts national celebrations and public events.
    3. Osu Castle (Fort Christiansborg)
Once a Danish colonial fort, Osu Castle now serves as a museum showcasing Ghana’s colonial history and political journey. Its architecture and history provide a glimpse into Accra’s past, and guided tours are available.
    4. Makola Market
One of Accra’s busiest and most colorful markets. Explore the stalls selling everything from textiles, food, and handmade crafts to electronics and beauty products. Be ready to bargain and soak in the chaotic energy!
    5. Artists Alliance Gallery
For a taste of Ghana’s contemporary art scene, head to this multi-story gallery. It features works from established and emerging Ghanaian artists, showcasing paintings, sculptures, textiles, and more.
    6. Labadi Beach
One of Accra’s most popular beaches, Labadi Beach is a great place to relax, enjoy local food, and listen to live music. On weekends, the beach becomes lively with parties, drumming, and dancing.

Day Trip to Cape Coast Castle

    1. Cape Coast Castle
A 2-3 hour drive from Accra, Cape Coast Castle is one of the most significant historical landmarks in West Africa. Built by the Swedes in the 17th century, it later became one of the largest slave trading posts on the West African coast.
    • Tour the Castle: Explore the dark dungeons where enslaved Africans were kept before being shipped off. Guides will walk you through the castle’s harrowing history and share stories about the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
    • Museum and Exhibits: The on-site museum offers more in-depth historical context and artifacts related to Ghana’s colonial past and the slave trade.
    • Reflection: After the tour, take a moment to reflect at the Door of No Return, which holds deep symbolic significance in African history. As a black woman, this place was a must visit!!

    How to Get There:

    • By Car: The easiest way to reach Cape Coast Castle is by hiring a private car or taxi for the day. The drive along the coast is scenic and takes about 2-3 hours from Accra.
    • By Bus: Buses and minibusses (trotros) run regularly between Accra and Cape Coast, offering a budget-friendly option.

    Cape Coast Castle Ghana

    Local Cuisine

    • Jollof Rice: A Ghanaian favorite, this one-pot dish of rice, tomatoes, and spices is often served with grilled chicken or fish.
    • Banku and Tilapia: A traditional dish made from fermented corn dough and cassava, served with grilled tilapia and spicy pepper sauce.

    • Waakye: A hearty dish made from rice and beans, usually served with a variety of sides like fried plantains, boiled eggs, and meat or fish.

    Best Time to Visit

    • The best time to visit Accra is during the dry season (November to March), when the weather is warm and there’s little rainfall. The rainy season (April to October) can make outdoor activities tricky, though it’s still possible to explore.

    Tips for Visiting

    • Visa: Most visitors will need a visa to enter Ghana. Check the latest requirements before your trip.
    • Health: Ensure you are up-to-date on recommended vaccinations, and you’ll need proof of yellow fever vaccination.
    • Currency: The Ghanaian Cedi (GHS) is used. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and restaurants, but you’ll need cash for markets and smaller vendors.
    • Language: English is the official language, but many locals speak Twi or other indigenous languages.

    Getting Around

    • Taxis: Widely available and relatively affordable, but be sure to negotiate the fare upfront.
    • Tro-tros: Shared minibus taxis used by locals. They’re cheap but can be crowded and are not always the most comfortable option.
    • Car Hire: For day trips or visits to nearby towns like Cape Coast, hiring a car with a driver is recommended.

    Where to Stay

    1. Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City: A luxurious 5-star hotel with high-end amenities, including a spa and outdoor pool.
    2. La Villa Boutique Hotel: A charming mid-range option in the Osu district, offering great access to restaurants and nightlife.
    3. Movenpick Ambassador Hotel: Another luxury choice with modern rooms, a pool, and great city views.

    What to Pack

    • Light clothing (Accra is hot and humid year-round).
    • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring markets and historical sites.
    • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection.
    • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated in the heat.

    Unique Experiences

    • Attend a Traditional Dance Performance: Accra is home to rich cultural heritage, and traditional music and dance performances are a must-see. Check with cultural centers or your hotel for schedules.
    • Explore Jamestown: Accra’s oldest district, Jamestown is famous for its colonial buildings, vibrant fishing community, and street art.
    • Visit W.E.B. Du Bois Center: This museum and research center dedicated to the African-American scholar and civil rights leader is a great place to learn about Pan-Africanism and Ghana’s role in the movement.

The Conflicting Advice on How to travel with kids

This post contains affiliate links. If you book or buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Flying and traveling with kids can be an adventure filled with both joy and stress. Every parent seems to have their own take on the best way to make the journey smoother, and the advice can sometimes be downright contradictory.

    Family Boarding or Not?

Some seasoned travelers swear by family boarding, saying it’s a lifesaver to get settled in before the general rush. Others argue it’s better to board last, minimizing the time your little ones have to be confined to their seats.

Car Seat or No Car Seat?

Bringing a car seat on the plane is often recommended for safety and comfort, especially for long flights. Yet, some parents find baby carriers or using the airline’s bassinet options more convenient, freeing up their hands and making it easier to move around.

To Check In the Stroller or Not?

Checking in the stroller at the gate means you’ll have it right up until you board and as soon as you land. On the other hand, some parents prefer to travel light and rent a stroller at their destination, avoiding the hassle of maneuvering through the airport with extra gear.

    Co-Sleeping on Vacation?

Whether you bring a travel crib or rely on co-sleeping arrangements, every family’s preference varies. Some find it easier to stick to home routines with a familiar crib, while others embrace the flexibility and convenience of co-sleeping while away.

The One Thing We All Agree On: Snacks!

No matter the approach to boarding, seating, or sleeping, one universal tip every parent seems to agree on is the power of snacks. Having a variety of snacks can be a game-changer in keeping kids happy and distracted during a flight.

    Trust Your Instincts

In the end, the real secret is to trust your instincts. You know your children better than anyone, so take the tips and advice, but ultimately do what feels right for your family. Every journey is unique, just like your family, so whether you opt for a travel crib or prefer co-sleeping arrangements, do what works for you.

5 Tips Flying with a 2-4 months old Baby

This post contains affiliate links. If you book or buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

✈️ Flying with a baby can be an adventure!

As someone who has travelled with my kids on their first international flight at 3 months old, here are some tips to make the journey smoother:

    1. Use a baby carrier through the airport to keep your hands free. My favourite one is the @ergobaby 360, and my babies would always sleep in it.
I also use a stroller. You can either gate-check it at the plane or check it with your luggage. I’ve tried both options, and it’s up to you. My favourite travel stroller for this age is the @uppababy Cruz and the basket is large enough to carry other items. If you buy the travel bag you are insured in case of damage.
Also, make sure to get acquainted with airline policies regarding strollers and car seats. I have never used a car seat in an airplane, so it’s up to you.

    2. Pack smart! Be prepared and bring extra diapers, wipes, formula if bottle feeding, and enough change of clothes for your baby! Make sure to pack extra clothes for the adults as well, as babies can have messes. Pack their favourite blankie or a cherished toy.

    3. Feed and pacify your baby during takeoff and landing to keep their tiny ears happy. This can be done by nursing or bottle-feeding, and it can be a game-changer for comfort.

    4. Dress smart! Layers are your friend. Plan for changing cabin temperatures by dressing your little one in easily adjustable layers. I use zippers and pyjamas at this age.

    5. Entertain quietly. Bring a few small, noise-free toys to keep your baby engaged without disturbing fellow passengers. It’s all about the strategic distraction game.

Remember, you’ve got this! Stay calm, breathe, and know that the flight is just a temporary phase of the adventure. Embrace the journey with patience.❤️

    • Stay Flexible
While it’s great to have an itinerary, Paris is full of surprises around every corner. Allow some flexibility in your schedule for spontaneous discoveries or simply to enjoy a longer leisure moment in a park or café.
    • Embrace the Local Cuisine
Paris is a food lover’s dream. Don’t miss the chance to introduce your kids to French pastries, bread, cheese, and other delicacies. Visit local markets like the Marché Bastille or Marché Monge for fresh, seasonal produce.
    • Utilize the Paris Visite Pass

Also reminder that the Paris subway system doesn’t have a lot of elevators and escalators – we spent a lot of time carrying strollers in the subway
    • Pack for Paris Weather
Paris weather can be unpredictable. Bring layers for everyone, comfortable walking shoes, and a compact umbrella, ensuring you’re prepared for whatever the day might bring.
    • Keep a List of Kid-Friendly Spots
Paris has numerous parks, playgrounds, and green spaces. Knowing the locations of these can be a lifesaver for letting kids play and run around, especially after visiting more adult-focused attractions.
    • Stay Connected
Consider a portable Wi-Fi device or a local SIM card to stay connected. Having internet access on the go can be incredibly useful for maps, translating, and looking up information. I usually use Sims with Airalo when I travel

How to prepare for a beach trip With a newborn baby + a young kid

This post contains affiliate links. If you book or buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

I just came back from a beach trip with my two kids, a 3-month-old baby and a 5-year-old, and it was my first time traveling alone with both of them. I was nervous before the trip, but it ended up being such a good experience and I learned so much along the way.

If you’re planning a beach vacation with a baby and a young child, here’s everything I packed, what helped, and how I prepared to make the trip easier.

I also created a few Amazon lists with the essentials I personally use:

How to prepare for a beach trip With a newborn baby + a young kid

    1. Travel Prep (Simple & Important)

    Documents:
    • Passports
    • Consent letter from the other parent (for solo-parent travel)
    • Travel insurance
    • Birth certificates (sometimes requested)
    • Hotel + flight confirmations
    • Emergency contacts
    • A printed copy + digital copies in your email

    Before you go:
    • I always braid my own hair before a beach trip and do the same for my daugther — water, sunscreen, and humidity make it easier to manage, and it saves time.
    • Check airline stroller rules (gate check details, size, weight limit, stroller bag).
    • Set up an eSIM or update your roaming plan.
    • Keep all your documents in one zipped folder.

    Carry-On Reminder:
Pack two full days of outfits + essentials in case luggage gets delayed.
AND pack beach clothes + sandals so you can change as soon as you land.

    Final Thoughts

You don’t need to pack your entire house — just the things that actually make your life easier at the beach.
The goal is simple: comfort, shade, hydration, and keeping your hands free.

    You’ve got this. 💛
