How to Deal with Lost Luggage and Tips to Help Get It Back

Travel mistakes do happen—we’re human. Losing your luggage can be stressful, but here are some steps that helped me get my luggage back quickly and efficiently:

    Dealing with Lost Luggage

    1. Stay Calm and Report Immediately: As soon as you realize your luggage is missing, report it to the airline’s baggage service office. Provide them with your baggage claim tag and any other relevant details. Staying calm and polite will help the process go more smoothly.
    2. Provide a Detailed DescriptionGive a detailed description of your luggage to the airline staff. Mention any distinctive features such as color, brand, and unique identifiers.

Tips for Getting Your Luggage Back

📸 Take a Picture of Your Luggage

Before you travel, take a picture of your luggage. This simple step can be incredibly helpful if your bag goes missing. When I lost my luggage, I showed the picture as proof to airport staff, which made it easier for them to identify and locate my bag.

    📍 Use a SmartTag

Attach a Samsung SmartTag or a similar tracking device to your luggage. This device allows you to track your bag’s location using your smartphone. When my luggage was misplaced, I knew it was still inside the airport thanks to the SmartTag. This information was crucial in quickly recovering my bag.

🏷️ Keep Your Luggage Tag Safe

Keep the luggage tag they give you at check-in until you get home, or take a picture of it. This tag contains important information that can help the airline track your bag. Having this tag or a photo of it on hand can speed up the process of finding your lost luggage.

    Why This Routine Helps

    1. Quick IdentificationHaving a picture of your luggage allows airport staff to quickly identify your bag among hundreds of others. It eliminates guesswork and speeds up the recovery process.
    2. Real-Time TrackingA SmartTag gives you real-time updates on your bag’s location. Knowing where your luggage is can significantly reduce stress and help you provide precise information to airline staff.
    3. Essential InformationThe luggage tag contains essential tracking information that airlines use to locate lost bags. Keeping this tag safe or having a photo of it ensures you have all necessary details to assist in the search.

    How to Implement This Routine

    • Take Photos: Snap a clear photo of your luggage before you check it in. Make sure the picture shows any distinctive features that set your bag apart from others.
    • Use Tracking Devices: Invest in a SmartTag or a similar device and attach it to your luggage. Set up the tracking app on your smartphone before your trip.
    • Save Luggage Tags: Either keep the physical luggage tag safe or take a picture of it after you check in. Store this photo in an easily accessible location on your phone.

Collect points to allow you to travel for free 💰

    1. Get a reward credit card 💳 (or multiple) – you will collect points with every purchase you make (and make sure to pay off the balance). I use my bank Aeroplan credit card for everything (food, gas, entertainment, travel…) and collect about 50K points a year. It is 1 free round trip. A lot of credit cards will give you additional bonus points for specific purchases.

    2. Every time I use an airline ✈️ or a hotel 🛏 I sign up for their points system. Over time you will accumulate enough points and become a preferred member (gives you upgrades and perks). But I tend only to use my Aeroplan points

    3. There are three major airline alliances, and I tend to stick to Star Alliance. Why? When you travel with the same alliance, you will accumulate points with your current reward system. I live in Canada and use Aeroplan, which is their reward program. I collect Aeroplan points with my credit card and will always book my flight with Air Canada or their member airlines like Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines and will still collect Aeroplan points. This allows me to book reward flights.

The same goes for hotels. I tend to stick to the Marriott Brand (who bought Sheraton). I collected enough points to book free hotel stays and become a preferred member.

It is my favorite way of traveling, especially going from North America to Europe

    2. Cost-Effective: Booking multi-city tickets can sometimes be cheaper than purchasing separate one-way tickets for each leg of your journey.
    3. Efficient Use of Time: By planning strategically, you can minimize travel time and maximize your stay in each location.

How to Plan a Multi-Destination Trip:

    1. Research Destinations: Choose the cities or countries you want to visit and research the best times to travel to each.
    2. Book Multi-City Flights: Use travel search engines like Google Flights or Skyscanner to find and book multi-city flight options.
    3. Create an Itinerary: Plan your route, ensuring you have enough time in each destination to enjoy the main attractions without feeling rushed.
    4. Accommodation: Book accommodations in each destination, considering factors like location, family-friendliness, and amenities.
    5. Travel Logistics: Arrange transportation between destinations, whether it’s flights, trains, buses, or car rentals.
